The design requirements for this project were:
-
Create a new and permanently enclosed entrance
-
Provide a better control for traffic going in and coming out of the museum
-
To have a strong presence at the street
-
Create a pedestrian friendly plaza in front of the building
As a symbol of what “history is” a metal sculpture was created with copper, bronze and chrome.
We receive our history as records written by those present or those who recorded the events from both oral and written traditions. Many records by nature of their age and culture have come to us with many details and some with very little details. All who read these documents shape opinions that are varied. Some close to reality and some distorted. What might be clear to some are questioned and are not clear to some. The tree trunk is viewed in line from one direction and in another as pieces that are not aligned or representing a whole.
The chrome branches by nature of the material are reflective and due to being round reflect images in distortion. The lights in the main entrance changes by season to reflect the time and mood of the year.
